Fyrsta kvikmynd leikstjórans Tassos Gkoletsos í fullri lengd, heimildarmyndin “True to Our Inner Daemon”, verður sýnd í Herhúsinu á Siglufirði annan í páskum frá kl. 16:00 – 18:00.
Myndin dregur áhorfendur inn í dulrænan og ákafan heim helgisiða frá Norður-Grikklandi, þar sem alsæluupplifun og andleg leit eru í forgrunni.
Einhvers staðar á mörkum raunsæis og töfra þráir venjulegt fólk hið kraftaverkakennda. Það sökkvir sér í iðrunarathafnir og leitar að augnabliki frelsis sem er svo ávanabindandi að það vill upplifa það aftur og aftur. Á þessum augnablikum alsælu hættir hugsunin – og lífið sjálft tekur yfir. Útkoman er áhrifarík og á köflum sálarkrefjandi sýn á grískan heiðindóm á mörkum nútímans.
Myndin er byggð á efniviði og goðsögnum helgisiða og kannar frummyndað ferli þar sem umbreytingin frá lífi til dauða er grundvallarás í merkingu þeirra. Helgisiðirnir eru bæði verk minningar og endurlausnar – annars vegar sem snýr að sameiginlegri sjálfsmynd og hins vegar til einstaklingsins sjálfs. Líkt og í öllum slíkum ferlum þarf einstaklingurinn að ganga í gegnum leit, þreytu, sársauka, tónlist, svefnleysi, dans, mat, sorg, ást og alsælu.
Myndin er ekki sögð heldur upplifuð. Með hreinni athugandi nálgun leiðbeinir leikstjórinn ekki, heldur býður áhorfendum að gefa sig á vald takts helgisiðanna og verða að lokum þátttakendur. Þótt upplifunin geti virst ógnvekjandi er hún ávallt frelsandi.
Heimildarmyndin hefur þegar hlotið alþjóðlega athygli. Hún var frumsýnd á heimildarmyndahátíðinni í Thessaloniki við afar góðar viðtökur og hlaut þar að auki verðlaun, meðal annars önnur verðlaun sem besta mynd og verðlaun fyrir hljóðvinnslu á heimildarmyndahátíðinni í Halkida.

The first feature film by director Tassos Gkoletsos, the documentary “True to Our Inner Daemon”, comes to immerse its audience in mystical intensity, with the ecstatic experience of rituals from Northern Greece.
Somewhere between realism and magic, ordinary people long for the miraculous. They instinctively immerse themselves in acts of atonement and seek a moment of freedom so addictive that they want to experience it again and again. It is in this moment of ecstasy that they stop thinking – and simply live. A soul-crushing experience of Greek paganism at the limits of the modern world.
Constructed from the materials and myths of ceremonies, “True to Our Inner Daemon” explores an archetypal process, where the transition from life to death is a fundamental axis that runs through the meaning of rituals. These rituals are acts of memory and redemption. Memory towards collective identity and redemption for each person individually. And like all acts of redemption, the individual must go through the search, the fatigue, the pain, the music, the insomnia, the dance, the food, the mourning, the love, and the ecstasy.
The film does not describe, but is experienced. Through a purely observational approach, Tassos Gkoletsos does not instruct the viewers, but instead invites them to abandon themselves to the rhythm of the ceremony and ultimately to participate. And if the experience seems terrifying, it is always redemptive.
The documentary has already won important distinctions: It has its world premiere at the 27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, receiving a particularly warm response from the audience, and won the 2nd Best Film Award and the Sound Award at the 19th Halkida Greek Documentary Festival.
